This is one of two self-portraits known to survive, the other being the portrait miniature on ivory. A self-portrait was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1847. This picture dates from a period when Ubsdell was lecturing the Portsmouth & Portsea Philosophical & Literary Society on art history and theory:
