This is a detail from miniature painter Ubsdell’s biographical picture ‘Governor’s Green’ that sustained water damage whilst in store in a warehouse in WW2. His painting is a view from the upstairs room of the pub in which he was born, of himself, wife and one of sons in the upstairs bedrooms of his house, surely the best in Old Portsmouth. Now ‘The Deanery’, and a view of celebrations on the Green contained by the Portsmouth Fortifications. A recent high resolution scan enables us the blow the picture up on a computer screen and see the incredible detail. (© Portsmouth Museums & Records Service 1998/276) The whole painting can be seen in Portsmouth’s ‘Portraits & Landscapes’ Exhibition.
